Important electric car safety tip – Retorquing EV wheels after tire change
I am sharing an important safety tip for all electric car drivers, who have just changed the tires on their EV. It’s very important to check and re-torque the wheels about 100 miles after changing the tires on your electric car. Why?
1. Safety and Stability
Proper torque ensures lug nuts are securely fastened, preventing wheels from loosening or detaching during driving. Electric cars, with instant torque and high power output, put more stress on wheel assemblies, making correct torque essential to avoid vibrations or wheel failure.
2. Even Load Distribution
Correct torque applies uniform pressure across the wheel, reducing uneven wear on tires and hubs. Electric vehicles (EVs) are often heavier due to battery packs, amplifying the need for balanced load to prevent damage to suspension or braking systems.
3. Brake Performance
EVs rely heavily on regenerative braking, which can stress wheel components differently than traditional braking. Properly torqued wheels ensure brakes function optimally, maintaining control and safety.
4. Preventing Warping
Over- or under-torquing can warp brake rotors or hubs, especially in EVs where precise engineering tolerances are common. This can lead to costly repairs and compromised handling.
5. Manufacturer Specifications
EVs often have specific torque requirements due to their unique weight distribution and performance characteristics. Following these specs ensures warranty compliance and optimal vehicle performance.
Always check torque after driving 50-100 miles in electric car after tire change
I highly suggest that you always use a calibrated torque wrench and check torque after driving 50-100 miles, as lug nuts can settle. This process is especially crucial for EVs to handle their high torque and weight effectively. I am very happy with my calibrated and certificated German Torque wrench from Gedore Red (Amazon).
