What are ERE certificates and how can you earn money charging your EV?
ERE certificates are a way to turn your home EV charging into a revenue stream by trading carbon offset credits. As of 2026, the Dutch system has transitioned to EREs (Emissiereductie-eenheden), while Germany uses a similar system called the THG-Quote.
1. What are ERE Certificates?
ERE stands for Emissiereductie-eenheden (Emission Reduction Units). These are digital certificates that prove you’ve avoided CO2 emissions by charging an electric vehicle with sustainable electricity instead of using fossil fuels. Fuel suppliers are legally mandated to “green” their fuel mix. If they can’t do it themselves, they must buy these certificates from the market. Essentially, big oil companies pay you for your clean charging behavior.
The MID-Meter Requirement
To participate, your charging station must have a built-in MID-certified meter. This is an officially calibrated energy meter that ensures the data reported is accurate and legally verifiable.
Important: A standard wallbox without an internal MID meter cannot generate EREs, even if you have a smart meter in your fuse box. The measurement must happen inside the charger to prove exactly what went into the car.
More ways to Earn Money Charging Your EV
Beyond EREs, there are several other “passive” income models for EV owners in 2026.
| Method | How it Works | Estimated Earnings |
| ERE / THG-Quote | Selling CO2 certificates to fuel suppliers. | €0.10 – €0.20 per kWh (~€200–€500/yr) |
| Smart Charging | Charging when prices are negative or low via dynamic energy contracts. | Up to €30/month in saved costs |
| V2G / Grid Services | Selling power from your car battery back to the grid during peak hours. | Varies; up to €100+ per month |
| Public Sharing | Renting out your private charger to the neighborhood. | Set your own margin over your kWh price |
ERE vs. THG-Quote (NL vs. Germany)
If you are operating across the Dutch and German borders, note that the systems are separate:
- Netherlands (ERE): Based on actual kWh usage. You earn more the more you drive and charge at home.
- Germany (THG-Quote): Often based on a fixed yearly amount per vehicle, though kWh-based models are becoming more common for private wallboxes.
Both systems require the charger to be registered to the person who holds the electricity contract for that specific address.
