Nigrin winter car screen wash fluid test and review
Today I am testing & reviewing a winter screenwash from Nigrin, one of my favorite car detailing brands from Germany. Let’s check out together whether the unique ENERGIZER scent of this antifreeze window washer fluid can keep me awake in my Tesla Model 3 Performance this winter. At only EUR 9 for 5 liters and frost protection up to -18 degrees Celcius this Nigrin product looks like a great deal.
Why use special winter car screen wash and not summer screen wash?
Winter screen wash (also called “all-season” or “winter-grade” screen wash) is specifically formulated to stay liquid and work properly in freezing temperatures, while summer screen wash is not.
What actually happens if you use summer screen wash in winter
- It freezes in the reservoir → Your washer pump runs but nothing comes out (or very little).
- It freezes in the pipes and nozzles → Can crack plastic lines or damage the pump from running dry.
- It freezes as soon as it hits a cold windscreen → Turns into a layer of ice that smears and blocks your view (dangerous).
Extra benefits of proper winter screen wash
- Lower freezing point (e.g. concentrate diluted to -20 °C or ready-mixed to -10 °C / -20 °C).
- Still cleans effectively (though slightly less aggressive on bugs than pure summer formulas).
- Often contains more anti-freeze alcohol, so it helps melt light ice and frost already on the screen when you spray.
Quick rule of thumb
- October–March: Use winter screen wash (at least -10 °C protection, preferably -20 °C if you get proper cold snaps).
- April–September: Summer screen wash is fine (better at removing insects).
Feedback
In short: Summer screen wash + sub-zero temperatures = frozen washer system and potentially dangerous iced-up windscreen. Winter screen wash is cheap insurance against that. Always top up with the winter version as soon as night temperatures start dropping toward 0 °C. Do you use a dedicated winter screen wash and have you tried other Nigrin products before?
