Should I invest €7500 in TESLA FSD for my Model 3 Performance in Europe?

Is buying Tesla FSD software actually an investment in the car which grows in value over time or is the subscription better? With all this inflation and low interest in savings in the bank maybe just getting Tesla FSD is not such a bad idea? Join me for a short discussion and help me decide if I should buy a perpetual software license for Tesla Full Self Driving software here in Europe (The Netherlands).

Top reasons to buy Tesla FSD perpetual license instead of subscribing to software

Here are my top reasons why I am considering to buy the Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) perpetual (one-time) license for my Model 3 Performance instead of subscribing to the software. The Tesla option for one-time purchases of FSD ends after February 14, 2026, shifting fully to a subscription model. If you still have access to the perpetual option like I do (e.g., via existing offers, transfers, or pre-deadline purchases), here are the key advantages over subscribing:

  1. Permanent ownership and no ongoing payments — You pay once (typically $8,000 USD in recent pricing) for a perpetual license tied to the vehicle. There’s no monthly fee forever, so after the breakeven point (roughly 6.5–7 years at $99/month), it becomes cheaper long-term if you keep the car indefinitely.
  2. Protection against future subscription price increases — Tesla has indicated that the $99/month rate is temporary and will rise as FSD capabilities improve (e.g., toward unsupervised driving). A perpetual purchase locks in your cost and shields you from hikes that could make subscribing more expensive over time.
  3. Transferability in private sales — The perpetual license is attached to the vehicle itself, making it transferable to a new owner in a private sale. This can increase the vehicle’s resale value, as the buyer gets FSD included without needing to subscribe or repurchase. (Subscriptions are not transferable in the same way and end if not paid.)
  4. Potential financing benefits when buying a new Tesla — If added at the time of vehicle purchase, the one-time cost can often be rolled into the car loan at low interest rates, spreading payments without separate monthly billing. This makes the upfront hit feel less painful compared to ongoing subscription charges.
  5. Certainty and peace of mind for heavy/long-term users — If you use FSD frequently and plan to keep the vehicle for many years (beyond ~7 years), or if you believe in the long-term value of autonomy features, outright purchase avoids the risk of subscription changes, pauses, or deactivation due to non-payment.
  6. The value of the software will likely increase over time as new functions get introduced and adoption around the world increases. Especially if self driving unsupervised gets introduced. Your car with a perpetual software will be much more valuable and have a greater resale value.

That said, for many people, the subscription is often more practical: it’s flexible (pause/cancel anytime), has a lower barrier to entry, and breaks even faster if you own the car for less than 6–7 years or switch vehicles often. The perpetual option only made strong financial sense for long-term ownership, especially with the risk of rising subscription prices or future unsupervised FSD justifying higher fees.

Do you think it is better to buy or subscribe to the Tesla Full Self Driving (supervised) software? Did you already buy the FSD software or do you have only enhanced autopilot and considering upgrading? Write me in the comments and I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
