Tip to block dirt and improve vision of Tesla cameras so you don’t miss security events
Do you also miss critical Tesla sentry mode events because the lenses of your cameras are dirty? There is a small 1 minute hack and routine for the Tesla cameras, that will keep the Tesla cameras clean longer. Let me show you my routine on my car.
Why do Tesla cameras get dirty especially in the winter
Tesla vehicles rely entirely on a camera-based vision system (Tesla Vision) for features like Autopilot, Full Self-Driving (FSD), parking assistance, and Sentry Mode, with no traditional radar or LiDAR in newer models. Unlike windshields (which have wipers and washer fluid), most exterior cameras lack built-in wipers or dedicated cleaning mechanisms (though some newer models and updates include limited washer jets or heaters for certain cameras). This design makes the cameras especially prone to getting dirty or obstructed in winter conditions. Here’s why it happens more in winter:
- Road spray and slush: When driving on wet, snowy, or slushy roads, tires kick up a mix of water, snow, mud, and grime that splashes onto the vehicle. The rear camera (on the trunk lid) is particularly vulnerable because it’s low and directly in the path of spray from the rear wheels or following traffic. Side (pillar/repeater) and front cameras also catch a lot of this airborne debris.
- Road salt and de-icing chemicals: Many regions use salt, brine, or chemical de-icers on roads for traction and melting ice. These substances create a sticky, corrosive film that quickly coats surfaces. Salt residue mixes with moisture to form a stubborn, opaque layer on camera lenses, often worse than plain dirt because it clings and dries hard. Owners frequently report cameras becoming “completely blocked” or triggering “limited visibility” warnings after short highway drives in salted conditions.
- Snow, ice, and freezing buildup: Snow or slush can stick to lenses, and at freezing temperatures, spray can freeze into ice. While some Tesla models (especially with Hardware 4+) have camera heaters to melt snow/ice, heavy accumulation or rapid buildup often overwhelms them. Condensation inside camera housings can also occur from temperature swings (cold outside, warm cabin), fogging lenses.
- No automatic cleaning for all cameras: Without wipers on every lens (unlike windshields), dirt accumulates faster in messy winter weather. Features like FSD can degrade or disable when multiple cameras get obscured, as the system needs clear views for safe operation.
