What are ERE certificates in The Netherlands charging EV?
Emission Reduction Units ERE, or emissiereductie-eenheden in Dutch) are tradable digital certificates in the Netherlands that monetise the emissions avoided when an electric vehicle is charged with electricity instead of burning fossil fuels.
Introduced on January 1, 2026, under the EU’s RED III directive (Besluit energie vervoer), the ERE system replaced the older HBE (Hernieuwbare Brandstofeenheden) framework and expanded eligibility so that home charger owners and small businesses can earn money from EV charging.
How the ERE Market Works
The ERE scheme is not a government subsidy, but a market-driven mechanism enforced by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa):
- Legal Mandate: Major fuel suppliers selling petrol and diesel in the Netherlands are legally required to offset a mandatory percentage of their carbon footprint each year.
- Generating Units: 1 ERE represents 1 kilogram of demonstrably avoided . Every kWh charged into an EV generates a fraction of an ERE.
- The Trade: Intermediary platforms bundle charging data from EV owners, convert it into certified EREs in the NEa register, and sell those certificates directly to fossil fuel companies.
- Payout: The proceeds from selling these units are paid out to the charge point owner minus a commission fee taken by the service provider.
Core Requirements to Participate
To claim ERE compensation for home or business charging, three criteria must be met:

| MID-Certified Charger | The wallbox must have an officially calibrated, built-in MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) kWh meter to verify consumption data. Uncalibrated internal meters or smart cables are not eligible. |
| Grid Connection Holder | By law, ERE rights belong to the holder of the electricity grid connection (the name on the EAN code for the address). |
| Booking Provider | Individuals cannot trade on the carbon market directly. You must register through an approved inboekdienstverlener (booking service provider). |
Earnings & Yield Math
The exact financial return depends on fluctuating market demand for carbon credits, but the underlying conversion uses standard national factors set by the NEa.
- Standard Conversion: In 2026, 1 kWh of standard grid electricity charged into an EV equals roughly 0.33 ERE.
- Market Valuation: Trading prices for ERE credits generally float between €0.30 and €0.50 per ERE.
- Net Payout: After service provider fees (typically 10% to 25%), EV owners receive approximately €0.10 to €0.16 per kWh charged.
- Annual Potential: For an average driver charging 3,000–4,000 kWh per year at home, this translates to roughly €300 to €500+ in annual earnings.
How to Claim ERE Rewards
- Verify Equipment: Confirm your charge point model includes a built-in MID meter.
- Choose a Booking Provider: Select an authorized inboekdienstverlener (e.g., Stekker, Tap Electric, Zeres, etc.).
- Connect Your Data: Authorise the provider to read your charger’s transaction data (via OCPP or direct integration) and register your EAN code.
- Receive Payouts: The provider handles the audit with the NEa, sells the units, and deposits the payout directly to your bank account on a quarterly or annual basis.
