What are the limitations of Tesla Summon in Europe?
Tesla’s Smart Summon—including the updated Actually Smart Summon (ASS)—is heavily restricted in Europe compared to North America due to strict safety and autonomous driving regulations mandated by European authorities (specifically UNECE R79).
Top 5 Limitations of Tesla Summon in Europe
- Operating Range (Proximity Rule): You must be within 6 meters (~19.5 feet) of the vehicle at all times while the feature is active. If you move further away, the car will immediately stop.
- Maximum Travel Distance: The vehicle can only travel a total distance of 15 to 20 meters (~49–65 feet) per maneuver. It cannot navigate across large parking lots to pick you up at the store entrance.
- Continuous Button Press: You must continuously hold down the dead-man’s switch/button in the Tesla app. Releasing the button or a loss in continuous mobile signal/Bluetooth connection immediately aborts the action.
- Public Road Restrictions: The feature is legally restricted to private property, such as private driveways or dedicated parking spaces, and is prohibited on public streets or complex shared traffic areas.
- Hardware & Vision Dependencies: Vehicles rely entirely on Tesla Vision (cameras). In poor lighting, heavy rain, or when fog/dirt covers camera lenses, the feature may degrade or become completely unavailable.

Why it’s so limited: European Whole Vehicle Type Approvals under UNECE R79 classify Smart Summon as a Remote Control Parking (RCP) system, requiring strict line-of-sight visual control by the operator standing next to the vehicle.
