How much profile depth for new winter tires is normal?

New winter tires typically have a tread depth of 10/32 to 11/32 inches (8 to 9 mm), which is deeper than all-season or summer tires to better grip snow and ice. This depth allows the aggressive tread patterns to compress snow and channel water/slush effectively. For context:

  • Legal minimum for any tire: 2/32 inch (1.6 mm).
  • Recommended minimum for winter tires: 5/32 to 6/32 inch (4 to 4.8 mm), as performance drops sharply below this.

Always check your specific tire model’s specs, as slight variations exist by brand. Use a tread depth gauge for precision.
