Are legacy 12V car accessories working with Tesla’s new 16V lithium starter battery?
Join me for an experiment and to answer the question “If classic 12V AGM battery car accessories are compatible with Tesla’s new 16V lithium starter battery”. I have collected all my favorite 12 Volt car accessories for this test if they will work in my new Tesla Model Performance which has a 16V starter battery. Here is a list of my own 12V car products featured in my video.
- GIANDEL 300 W Pure Sine Wave Inverter (Amazon)
- 12v cooler box car (Amazon)
- 12v mini fridge (Amazon)
- AEG 12V Jump starter, compressor & power bank (Amazon)
- Carpoint 12v water boiler car (Amazon)
- Slime Flat tire repair and compressor (Amazon)
Why 12V car accessories are important during blackout power outages
Here’s why 12V car accessories become absolutely crucial during a prolonged power outage (especially in winter when the grid goes down for hours or days):
| Accessory | What it does during a blackout | Why it’s a lifesaver in winter/power outage |
|---|---|---|
| Car itself (engine running) | Generates unlimited 12–14.4 V electricity + heat | Keeps you warm, charges everything, runs accessories |
| 12V USB chargers / power banks | 5–20 W → phones, tablets, Wi-Fi hotspots, radios | Communication, news, emergency calls, contacting family |
| 12V heated blanket / seat cushion | 40–60 W → real warmth (up to 50–55 °C surface temp) | Prevents hypothermia if you have to sleep in the car or house is ice-cold |
| 12V electric cooler/warm box | Keeps insulin, baby milk, or medication at correct temperature; can also heat food | Critical for diabetics, infants, or anyone on refrigerated meds |
| 12V kettle or coffee maker | 120–300 W → boiling water for tea, coffee, instant meals, sterilising water | Morale + hydration when gas stove is out or unsafe |
| 12V inverter (300–2000 W) | Turns 12 V DC → 230 V AC → runs laptops, CPAP machines, small fridges, LED lights, power-tool chargers | Literally keeps medical devices alive (sleep apnea), lets you work remotely, lights the house |
| 12V LED floodlights / work lights | 10–50 W but 1000–5000 lumens → bright white light for hours | Lighting when everything is pitch black for days |
| 12V tyre inflator / air compressor | Re-inflates tyres after temperature drops (tyres lose ~1 psi per 5 °C drop) | Safety — under-inflated tyres in snow/ice = accidents |
| 12V jump-starter power bank | Starts your car if battery dies from cold or from running accessories all night | You’re not stranded with a dead car in -15 °C |
| 12V portable stove/fan heater | Small ceramic heaters (150–300 W) give actual heat inside the car or garage | Emergency heat source when house heating fails |
Real-life winter blackout scenario
- Grid down for 3–5 days after ice storm → no heat, no lights, phones dying, food spoiling.
- You sit in the running car (or idle 10–15 min every hour):
- Charge all phones & portable batteries
- Run a 12 V heated blanket for the kids
- Keep insulin or baby milk in a 12 V cooler
- Power a CPAP via inverter so someone can actually sleep
- Boil water with a 12 V kettle for hot drinks or rehydrating freeze-dried food
- Light the driveway with 12 V LED floodlights so you don’t fall on ice
A modern car battery + alternator can easily deliver 500–1000+ watts continuously while the engine is running — far more than most people’s little solar generators — and you already own it.
Feedback
In a serious winter power outage your car turns into a mobile 1 kW power station + heater + hotel room. Having a few good 12 V accessories (especially an inverter, heated blanket, and strong USB chargers) is often the difference between miserable/cold/dangerous and actually comfortable and safe. Did you ever experience a power outage and what 12V car accessories did you use?
