Why do you choose to work in corporate sales and what will it get you specifically
This is an excerpt from my book “The Corporate Sales Winners Guide.” First of all, sales (selling) is something that anyone who wants to could learn. So what are the characteristics of a good salesperson?
The Best Seller….
- Is and remains himself.
- Gives the client new insights and tips.
- Is honest and helps his client make choices.
- Constantly creates added value for the customer.
- Helps customer solve problems.
Based on these points, I believe that truly anyone can become a successful salesperson. I am confident that you too will succeed.
Provided you:
- Develop the right mindset, willpower and discipline.
- Get to know your own unique personality and know how to use it, during your conversations with clients.
- Shows interest in a particular industry and its associated customers.
There are a total of three main aspects that make me so grateful and happy I ever got into a sales role. Three reasons that years later motivate me daily to work in sales.
3 reasons why you should work in business sales
- Sales rewards your personal effort, always with the trust and appreciation of your customers, because you help your customers become more successful.
- Sales always rewards your personal effort with recognition and appreciation from other colleagues and executives. All successes achieved can always be claimed by yourself or as a team captain.
- Sales rewards your personal effort with two salaries! First, a good base salary based on your knowledge and experience. Second, you will earn a variable salary on top of your base salary. You can earn very large bonuses based on the client deals you win.
Why a sales career in the ICT sector?
I myself have worked my entire career in the corporate ICT sector. Mainly at large international telecommunications companies. Depending on the industry you work in and your personal work experience, the bonus amounts here are huge. It is very common, that specialized salespeople earn two to three times or even more than their base salary! That base salary alone is more than enough for a nice house. No financial worries and several nice vacations a year!
To become successful in sales and be able to sustain it for a long time, you have to be doing something you enjoy, or something for which you have a real passion. This is because otherwise you will never be able to develop the discipline to sustain sales every day.
Consistency, discipline, your unique personality and passion, make for guaranteed great success. Every time, regardless of your age, experience or the industry you work in. So it is vital to discover which industry, products and customer groups appeal to you the most.
I’m going to show you how to discover that for yourself so that making the right choice becomes easier.
For me, that was telecommunications. I had always been fascinated by the Internet and cell phones. That’s why I was open to the sales position at a major American telecommunications company, and that’s even though I was firmly convinced at the time that I was not a real salesman! I did it anyway and I was open to it. Because telecom was an interesting subject for me.
Considering sales and looking at the image of sales from a different point of view
I would ask you to do the same: be open to sales and look at it from a different point of view, because for any employer and for any position, it is a huge plus if you bring sales experience! Now if you have to make a career choice after college, or you want to switch jobs, sales is always a good choice. It doesn’t matter what you studied. Your own unique personality is going to make you appreciate sales and become successful.
Maybe you’ve never considered sales because it has a bad name. You know…. Salespeople! Aren’t they those annoying pushy people who call you when you don’t have time, or harass you while shopping when you just want to look around the store? Or charge you way too high a price when buying a new kitchen or sofa? Only to trick you with a discount after all?
As you can see, salespeople don’t have the very best image. This is very unfortunate, because in reality, good salespeople are directly responsible for the success of a business. They are responsible for customers placing orders in the first place and deciding to become customers. Salespeople are responsible for ensuring that other people within the company have jobs, that the company they work in can grow and continue to invest.
Without good sales, there is no turnover, no new customers, no expansion and no one has a steady job.
All these responsibilities also mean, of course, that sales is constantly under pressure and requires constant performance. Especially at the beginning of your career you will have to get used to this. Simply because you do not yet have enough experience to deal with this. But later in your career and once you have found your niche, this becomes a lot easier. Especially if you stay honest, work disciplined and always try to help customers. Indeed, then you will always see that you will be successful.
Meeting sales targets automatically and making a lot of money in the process!
You’re going to see, that you don’t actually have to worry about all those targets at all, because the results will come naturally thanks to the momentum and effort you’ve created yourself. So I’m going to show you later on in this book, how you can do this yourself and become successful at this.
Last but not least … and this is an incredibly important reason why you should choose sales. I have deliberately written this reason last in this chapter, because you will not start earning thousands of euros bonus without having fun in your work and being able to be passionate about it.
Yes, it’s really true…. I am talking about at least thousands of dollars of extra salary. Year in and year out … I am not exaggerating!
I want you to earn this too, to become successful and will succeed. I’m going to help you and give you the tools to do it in this book. If you haven’t chosen a career yet and are unsure about sales, or have already started in sales and are wondering if it was the right move.
Trust me…. You will succeed!
Becoming successful in sales can make you an awful lot of money. If you will not live extremely above your means and invest your money smartly, you will even manage to retire early!
In other words and this is the highest achievable goal: Sales is going to help you become financially independent. No longer dependent on a permanent salaried job. You can live off the returns and profits from your investments. This allows you to do whatever you want.
Sounds impossible and too good to be true? No it is not, it is achievable!
Retire earlier, retire faster or become self-employed thanks to sales career experience
Where others may dream about retiring a few years earlier, you realize this at a much younger age! During your sales career, you’re going to notice all those previews and benefits of this very soon. You can work flexibly and independently and don’t have to be in the office all the time.
Once you have developed a unique set of skills and have specialized knowledge of a particular service, product or industry, you can start out for yourself as an independent expert. You will build a fantastic network of clients and relationships that will stay with you throughout your career. A business network from which you can benefit again and again.
This is all possible thanks to sales and I really love it! I love it when I think of all the opportunities, successes and the money you will make! Only if you decide to commit and go for it 100%! There is only one word that can describe your success, fun and income: MAXIMUM.
