I Tried Grok AI & Tesla FSD in Europe (KFC to Hospital Test)
Can Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Grok AI handle an emergency drive to the hospital in Europe? In this video, I put Tesla FSD in Europe and Grok AI (in Conspiracy Mode!) to the test. We start with a quick run to KFC before testing whether Grok and Tesla FSD can handle navigation commands to the nearest hospital emergency room. Plus, I share real-world feedback on European FSD performance, phantom braking on the highway, and key feature differences between the US and European updates.
How can Tesla FSD help in case of emergency?
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and its underlying active safety stack intervene during emergency situations using dynamic pathing, continuous camera monitoring, and autonomous vehicle control.
1. Incapacitated Driver / Medical Emergency Response
If a driver suffers a sudden medical emergency, faints, or becomes unresponsive while FSD or Autopilot is engaged:
- Attentiveness Escalate & Stop: The cabin camera and steering sensors track driver engagement. If the system detects no response after visual and audible alerts, it automatically slows the vehicle down, turns on hazard lights, brings the car to a safe, controlled stop (either on the shoulder or within the lane), and shifts into Park.
- Emergency Access: Once fully stopped, the vehicle automatically unlocks all doors and turns on interior lighting to allow first responders immediate access.
2. Automatic Collision Evasion (Active Swerving)
Standard Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) only applies the brakes in a straight line. FSD expands on this with dynamic evasive maneuvers:
- Steering & Pathing: If braking alone cannot prevent an impact, FSD can actively steer around obstacles, execute split-second lane changes, or pull onto the road shoulder to avoid oncoming head-on collisions, rear-end pileups, or sudden debris.
- Autonomous Takeover: When enabled, Automatic Collision Evasion allows the FSD stack to briefly take control and execute evasive maneuvers even if FSD was not actively engaged by the driver at the moment the hazard appeared.
3. Emergency Vehicle Detection
- Lights & Sirens: The external camera suite and audio detection systems detect active emergency vehicles (police cars, fire engines, ambulances) displaying flashing lights or sounding sirens.
- Yielding Behavior: On highways or city streets, FSD automatically slows down, adjusts lane positioning, or yields right-of-way when an emergency vehicle is approaching or operating on the shoulder.
4. Vulnerable Road User Avoidance
- Pedestrians & Cyclists: FSD continuously calculates predicted paths for pedestrians, animals, and cyclists. If someone steps into the road unexpectedly, the vision neural network immediately computes an emergency stopping or swerving path—often faster than human reaction speed.
Note on System Limitations: While FSD includes these fail-safes, it remains classified as a Level 2 (Supervised) driver-assist system. Drivers are legally required to remain attentive and keep hands on or near the wheel to take control at any time.
